Questions

Short answers. The docs have the long ones.

What is Hexbot?
Hexbot is a desktop app that runs a crew of AI bots on your own Mac or Linux machine. Each bot has a face, a name, a model, tools, and its own memory. You chat with one bot at a time, or put people and several bots together in a room.
What does 'nightly early access' mean?
For now Hexbot ships only as nightly builds. A new build is made each day the code changes, and an installed copy updates itself to the newest one. Nightlies get fixes and features first, and sometimes break. Back up ~/.hexbot now and then, and report what you find. Earlier builds stay on the download page if you need to go back.
Is Hexbot free?
Yes. Hexbot is free and open source under AGPL-3.0. You pay your model provider for what your bots use, through an API key or a subscription you already have.
Which AI models can I use?
More than 50 providers, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI, OpenRouter, and DeepSeek. You can sign in with a ChatGPT, SuperGrok, or Nous Portal subscription instead of pasting a key, and run local models through Ollama or LM Studio. Each bot can use a different model. See Providers and billing.
What can the bots actually do?
Run terminal commands, read and write files, run code, drive a browser, look at images, set reminders, message each other, and more. With your own accounts they can also search the web, make images, and work in Notion, Airtable, Home Assistant, or any MCP server. Every tool
Does my data leave my computer?
Conversations, memory, files, and keys stay in ~/.hexbot on the machine running Hexbot. What a bot sends to its model goes to the provider you chose, as with any AI app. Hex Connect, if you use it, never sees your chats.
Which computers does it run on?
macOS on Apple Silicon or Intel, and Linux as an AppImage or a deb package. There is no Windows build yet. Phones and other computers connect to your Hexbot through a browser or the app after pairing.
How do bots work together?
In a room. Mention a bot and it replies; mention nobody and the room's main bot answers. Bots can mention each other to hand off or check work, up to a set number of bot turns per message. See Rooms.
Will a bot run commands without asking?
Inside the workspace, yes: in Auto mode, the default, commands run in a sandbox with no internet access that can write only there. A command that needs the internet or a file outside the workspace is first checked by the bot's model: routine steps, such as downloading a public page, run; risky ones, such as deleting files outside the workspace or force pushing, wait for your approval. That check is the model's judgment, not a sandbox. Manual asks before every change; Bypass asks nothing. See Approvals.
What is dreaming?
Once a day each bot reads that day's conversations and tidies its memory: it merges notes, sharpens them, and drops what went stale. It never changes the bot's soul. See Dreaming.
What happens when I delete a conversation?
Its history is removed. Anything the bot already saved to memory stays until you edit it in Bot settings, Memory.
Can my family or team share one Hexbot?
No. A daemon belongs to one person. Each person runs their own Hexbot, and one person can keep several daemons and switch between them in the app. Rooms with other people will come through Hex Connect.
Can I use it away from home?
Yes, through Tailscale or Hex Connect. Pairing on your own network never needs Connect. See Hex Connect.
Do I need the app on every device?
No. Once a daemon is registered with Hex Connect, sign in at connect.hexbot.app on any phone or computer and open it in the browser. The app is nicer on a computer you use every day; the browser is enough for the rest.
How is Hexbot related to Hermes Agent?
Hexbot is built on Hermes Agent by Nous Research. Hexbot's core began as a fork of it and runs each bot; the faces, rooms, memory and dreaming, pairing, and the app are Hexbot's own.
Where do I report a bug or ask for a feature?
On GitHub Issues. Include the nightly version from Settings, About.
